Our office regularly cares for the dental needs of children as young as three years old. However, if you notice that your child has a problem with his or her teeth or gums prior to this age, please schedule an appointment.
Many parents choose to bring their children to our office for dental checkups at age two, allowing them to become familiar with the sights, sounds, and friendly helpers in our dental office. We call this a Happy Visit, because it helps children develop a sense of comfort with the dentist, so they don’t resist their dental visits in the future.
Your child’s regular dental checkup at age three will involve a tooth-by-tooth inspection and periodontal exam. The dentist will check for proper development, as well as tooth decay and other areas of concern. Your child’s bite will be assessed each visit; as new teeth come in and the jaw bones grow, concerns about your child’s bite may develop. Habits such as thumb sucking, which can negatively affect the development of your child’s smile if continued, will also be discussed with both you and your child. Addressing these habits may allow your child to avoid extensive orthodontic treatment later in life.
As your child grows, he or she will need regular checkups and hygiene visits every six months to ensure optimal oral health. Our team will also teach oral homecare techniques so that your child can learn how to effectively brush and floss, with your help at first, then on his or her own.
Sealants and Fluoride
The dentist may recommend dental sealants or fluoride supplements for your child. Sealants are thin, clear coatings that protect hard-to-clean back teeth from the sugars that cause tooth decay. If the molars have deep grooves, it’s impossible to clean all of the bacteria from these spaces; with sealants, bacteria can’t enter, and the tooth is protected.
Fluoride attracts other minerals to strengthen tooth enamel and ward off cavities. Because most bottled water does not contain fluoride, your child may be deficient in this essential mineral. Your dentist can apply a fluoride supplement to your child’s teeth; this is a quick and easy procedure, and because the fluoride supplements are flavored, children usually don’t mind it at all. Sealants and fluoride supplements are quick and easy protective measures that can save your little one from needing fillings later.
